Today, when almost everyone is using many mobile apps like WhatsApp, DoT has asked TRAI whether internet calling and messaging from these apps can be brought under the legal framework. The department also returned the recommendations issued in 2008 on Internet-based telephones to the Telecom Regulatory Commission of India (TRAI) last week and asked them to review them.

The Internet calling and messaging are happening through many mobile apps like WhatsApp, Signal, Google Meet, Facebook Messenger, and Telegram. An official of the department said that the earlier recommendations of TRAI on Internet telephony were not accepted by the Department of Telecommunications but now the department has approved the mobile apps working as over-the-top (OTT) players in the telecom sector and their internet calling and messaging. To review the facilities.

so far it happened
