BCCI can appoint these two players captain instead of Jasprit Bumrah due to Rohit Sharma's retirement

Rohit Sharma, the Indian cricket team captain, has left everyone speechless with a surprise retirement from Test cricket at a point when Team India has to engage in a five-match Test series on the tour of England immediately after the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. This is not only a huge disappointment for cricket lovers but has become a point of concern for the team management as well since they need to appoint a new Test captain at the soonest.

The team has vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah for Test captaincy. But according to some media reports, the selectors do not want to make Bumrah the captain due to fitness issues and workload management. They want a young player to become the captain available to play all the series matches. In such a situation, two contenders are being told for this.

According to reports, the selectors want to give this responsibility to young batsman Shubman Gill. Let us tell you that Gill is also the vice-captain of the ODI team at this time and has consistently emerged as a rising star in Indian cricket. According to the report, playing Jasprit Bumrah in all five matches of the England Test series is impossible. The BCCI can give him rest in some matches keeping in mind the workload management. In such a situation, the team needs to choose a captain who plays the entire series.

Gill bats at number three in the Test team. This batsman also has a good record in all three formats. Gill has scored 1893 runs in 32 matches at an average of 35.05 while playing for India in the longest format. This includes five centuries and seven half-centuries. The second reason behind Gill being made the captain is his fitness. He is one of the fittest players in India and has hardly missed a match.

Apart from Gill, the team management can also hand over the captaincy to KL Rahul. Although Rahul has captained the Test team before, his record as a captain has not been particularly impressive so far. He has captained India in three Test matches, out of which the team won two. During the South Africa tour in the year 2021-22, he took over the captaincy in the absence of Virat Kohli in the second Test. After this, he also led the Indian team on the Bangladesh tour.

Recently, Rahul has regained his rhythm in Test cricket and played some important innings in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. If the 33-year-old batsman is given the captaincy again, it will strengthen his confidence even more. Rahul has also previously captained Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL.
