RBI Report: ATM Numbers Dip in FY2025 as Digital Payments Rise
RBI Report: The growing trend of digital payments has reduced the number of ATMs in the country to 2.51 lakh in FY25. Learn a complete analysis of data and banking trends from public and private banks.
Due to increasing digitization in the country's financial sector, the number of automated teller machines (ATMs) has declined marginally in FY2025, according to a report released by the RBI on Monday.
According to the report Banking Trends and Progress in India for FY2025, the number of bank branches has registered an increase of more than 2 percent due to the expansion of the public sector bank networks. The report further reveals that the private bank strategies have further reduced the total number of ATMs in the country to 251,057 as of March 31, 2025, from 253,417 in the same period last year.
According to the report, the ATM network of the private sector banks is down by 79,884 compared to the last year, whereas the ATM network of the public sector banks is also down by 134,694 compared to the last year, with a total of 133,544. The report also states that this decline is due to the closure of off-site ATMs by both groups.
"Increased digitization of payments has reduced the need for customers to transact through ATMs," the report states. The number of independently operated white-label ATMs has increased to 36,216 from 34,602 in the same period last year.
