The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), the largest paramilitary force in the nation, has promoted 2,600 cooks and water carriers in total. For the first time in its 85-year history, this has occurred. The CRPF was founded in 1939. Approximately 3.25 lakh male and female force personnel are served by a vast network of kitchens, canteens, and other administrative tasks managed by 12,250 personnel from two special categories.

According to a senior officer, through an order, 1,700 cooks and 900 water carriers have been promoted from their constable posts to head constables. This has happened for the first time in the 85-year history of the CRPF. In 2016, when the central government implemented the recommendations of the Seventh Pay Commission, they were named a special cadre of cooks and water carriers.

Another officer said that these personnel were recruited at the lowest level in the hierarchy. They were never promoted and on average, they retired from the same post even after about 30-35 years of service. Cooks and water carriers are an essential part of the operations of any force.

There are about 45 such personnel in each battalion of the CRPF. He said that the CRPF had prepared a proposal regarding the promotion of these personnel. It was later approved by the Home Ministry. The 2,600 personnel promoted under this order were recruited between 1983 and 2004.
