US Justice Department ends diesel investigation without filing charges, Mercedes-Benz statement

Mercedes-Benz Group AG said that the US Justice Department has ended the investigation related to exhaust emissions and will not press any charges against the German carmaker.

"We can confirm that the US Department of Justice (DOJ) has closed its investigation and will not bring any charges against Mercedes-Benz," the Stuttgart-based company said in an emailed statement on Saturday.

Renata Jungo Bruenger, a member of the Mercedes-Benz management board, said the decision was "another important step towards legal certainty about the various diesel proceedings". DOJ officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment outside business hours Saturday.

The company's stock experienced its largest decline in over three months in April 2016. At that point, it declared that the DOJ had requested an examination of the certification and approval procedures it had in place for exhaust emissions in the US.

The company said it was cooperating fully with authorities and a class action lawsuit was filed in the US. Allegations that some of its cars violate emissions standards were "baseless", prompting the DOJ's request.

Handelsblut first reported the DOJ's decision.
