Shubman Gill Discharged from Hospital, Doubtful for Second Test vs South Africa
Shubman Gill Health Update: Team India captain Shubman Gill may have been discharged from the hospital, but he has been advised not to fly for a few days. If Gill is unavailable for the Guwahati Test, India's problems are sure to increase.
Indian captain Shubman Gill was released from Woodlands Hospital in Kolkata on Sunday, but he will not be in a position to fly with the Indian team to Guwahati. The news can create trouble for Team India. He was ruled out of the first Test against South Africa due to a neck spasm. He called it quits after playing just three balls in India's first innings and didn't bat in the second innings. His absence proved to be costly for India. The hosts lost the match by 30 runs and fell behind 0-1 in the series. The biggest question is: Who will replace Gill if he misses the second Test in Guwahati?
Cricket Association of Bengal president Sourav Ganguly met Gill at Woodlands Multispecialty Hospital immediately after India's defeat and confirmed that his condition is stable, but he remains under observation. However, he was discharged from the hospital late in the evening. Now, his availability for the second Test in Guwahati, starting on November 22, remains uncertain.
According to media reports, doctors have advised him to avoid commercial air travel during his recovery, making it unlikely he will join the team on Wednesday's flight. He is also expected to miss India's final training session in Kolkata on Tuesday. Gautam Gambhir also admitted that Gill's absence severely impacted India's chase.
If Gill is not fit, India will have to rely on either Sai Sudharshan or Devdutt Padikkal. Sudharsan had previously performed impressively against the West Indies, but recently struggled for India A. Padikkal's recent return wasn't particularly impressive. The arrival of either of them would add another left-handed batsman, leaving the team with a surplus of left-handed batsmen, who would find it difficult to counter South African off-spinner Simon Harmer.

Gill's injury comes amid a heavy workload due to his consistent playing across formats. He previously missed a Test match in October 2024 due to a similar neck problem. Gill is the player who has played the most matches for India in 2025, with 32. Axar Patel (29) is second, followed by Kuldeep Yadav, KL Rahul, and Varun Chakravarthy, who have played 20 matches each. Continuing to play Gill in all formats now appears to be a burden for the Indian team management.
