French President Emmanuel Macron met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky late on 8 February. After this, he took Zelensky with him on the plane to give a speech in the EU Parliament, Europe's largest parliament on Thursday.
On Friday, the day after both of these incidents, Macron said, "I can take away the highest civilian honour of France given to Putin. Just waiting for the right time for that." In fact, long before the Ukraine war, in 2006, former French President Jacques Chirac gave Putin the Legion of Honor, France's highest civilian honour. Since the war, the people of France have been demanding Putin take it back.
In 2017, President Macron withdrew the Legion of Honor award from Hollywood director Harvey Weinstein. Actually, Harvey Weinstein was accused of sexual misconduct during the Me Too movement. After which this decision was taken.
At the same time, Harvey Weinstein is not the only person from whom this honour has been withdrawn. The Legion of Honor was also stripped of the famous American cyclist Lance Armstrong. He has been accused of cycling with drugs.
The Legion of Honor is the highest honour in France. It was started by Napoleon in the year 1802. France has maintained the tradition even after years have passed.
Many Indians have also achieved this honour. It was first awarded to Maharaja Pratap Singh in 1918, and since then it has been given to 40 Indians. In August 2022, this honour was also given to Congress leader Shashi Tharoor.
Ukraine is continuously demanding fighter jets from western countries. Meanwhile, on Friday, the President of France indicated that he can fulfill this demand of Ukraine. He said that even if we want to, we cannot give fighter jets to Ukraine in a week or two. I am not completely ruling out the possibility of giving fighter jets.
