New GST Slabs Implemented: No Price Cut for Smartphones and Laptops
GST Rate Cut, GST 2.0 New Prices: GST 2.0 has been implemented from September 22nd. Customers were expecting significant relief on mobile phones, computers, and gadgets due to the GST reform, but the tax rates on mobile phones and laptops have remained unchanged.
Effective September 22nd, new GST slabs have been introduced, reducing the four previous rates to just two: 5% and 18%, with luxury and sin products taxed at 40%. While many everyday items now benefit from lower taxes, mobile phones, laptops, and electronic gadgets will still be taxed at the previous 18% rate, meaning their prices will stay unchanged.
Experts suggest that the government purposely chose not to lower taxes on these electronics to retain industry stability and prevent production cost increases. Stable tax rates will also help companies manage inventory and plan their pricing strategies better.
Buyers of smartphones and laptops should expect no price changes since GST remains the same for these items. Conversely, taxes on common household and beauty products have been reduced, easing expenses for consumers, who can now spend saved money on electronics.
