The guidelines of RBI regarding ATM have come into operation with effect from Thursday. Customers will now be charged Rs 23 for withdrawing above the free permissible limit at ATM in a month. Previously banks could charge at most Rs 21 on such withdrawal.

Customers can make five free-of-cost financial and non-financial transactions every month at their bank's own automated teller machines (ATMs). Customers can avail free financial and non-financial transactions at other banks' ATMs as well. Customers can make three free-of-cost transactions in metro centres and five free-of-cost transactions in non-metro centres.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had issued instructions related to 'Use of Automated Teller Machines/Cash Recycler Machines - Review of Interchange Fees and Customer Charges' on March 28. The RBI circular said, "In addition to free transactions, a maximum fee of Rs 23 may be charged from the customer per transaction. This will be effective from May 01, 2025."

The revised instructions also apply to transactions made through cash recycler machines (other than cash deposit transactions). The circular also states that ATM interchange fees will be decided by the ATM network. As of end-March 2025, there were 2,55,885 bank ATMs, cash recycler machines (CRMs) and white label ATMs (WLAs).
