Doctors said- hand will have to be amputated: 1% chance of success in surgery, live with vitality, reserve player in Netherlands team in Hockey World Cup
Dennis Warmerdam, who was present as a reserve player for the Netherlands in the Hockey World Cup 2023, was told by doctors that he would never be able to play hockey again. He had pain in his right hand for more than 2 years. He underwent treatment and surgery from many doctors, but this only increased his suffering. After getting many tests done over 2 years, it was found that he had muscle cancer.
The doctors assured him that his disease was not life-threatening, but that the only cure was to have his hand amputated. Warmerdam consulted another doctor, who prescribed another surgery. However, the chances of this surgery being successful were just 1%. Warmerdam returned to the field for his club with the intention of playing hockey one last time before starting treatment for cancer.
In this match, all players wore Warmerdam's number 13 jersey during the warm-up and carried it on their shoulders after the game. During this, Warmerdam could not hold back his tears. Eventually, his surgery was successful. However, the doctors told him that he would not be able to play hockey again.
Upon regaining consciousness after surgery, Warmerdam moved his hand and flexed his wrist as if he were holding a hockey stick. After this, he tried to lift a glass, in which he was successful. Then Warmerdam filled the glass with water and tried to lift it again. He was successful in this also. He got to hope that he would be able to return to the hockey field again.
Warmerdam was able to hold a hockey stick 4 months after surgery. After 1 year he played his first match for his club. They also became part of the Olympic pool. He was also selected for Bloemendaal's side and was one of the top goalscorers in the league. Currently, he is the reserve player of his team in Rourkela and he is hopeful that he will definitely take the field once in the tournament.
