Supreme Court declared the arrest of Newsclick founder illegal, ordered his early release

The Supreme Court termed the arrest of Newsclick founder Prabir Purkayastha in a case under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) as illegal. Along with this, the bench of Justice BR Gavai and Justice Sandeep Mehta ordered his immediate release. NewsClick was accused of taking money from China to disrupt the sovereignty of India and create discontent against the country.

In the FIR lodged against the news portal, Purkayastha is also accused of conspiring with a group called 'People's Alliance for Democracy and Secularism' (PADS) to disrupt the electoral process during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

A digital media platform is called News Click. On which a foreign funding case has been reported. The Bharatiya Janata Party had charged that the party's support for China was destroying India's atmosphere. Before establishing the special cell, ED had carried out raids as well. ED had revealed that News Click had received approximately Rs 38 crore in foreign funding. Following that, the BJP claimed that Congress had also received large sums of money from China between 2005 and 2014. Furthermore, according to The New York Times report, News Click has received funding from overseas sources totaling Rs 38 crore. Several journalists split this money.
