Shreyas Iyer Set for Comeback After Two Months, To Lead Mumbai Against Himachal
Shreyas Iyer Captain, Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26: Shardul has been ruled out of this domestic 50-over tournament due to injury. In his place, Shreyas Iyer has been appointed captain of the Mumbai team.
Right-handed batsman Shreyas Iyer is all set to come back to cricket after almost two months. Fans will witness him performing against Himachal Pradesh on January 6 in the upcoming match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has appointed him as the captain for his team. This will happen instead of Shardul Thakur.
Shardul has been ruled out of this domestic 50-over tournament due to injury. The Mumbai Cricket Association said in a statement on Monday, "The MCA is pleased to announce that Shreyas Iyer has been appointed captain of the Mumbai senior men's team for the remaining league matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy."
However, whether Shreyas Iyer will continue as captain beyond the League stage will be dependent on taking fitness clearance from the Board of Control for Cricket in India, to participate internationally. Iyer has been selected in the Indian team that will lock horns with New Zealand in a three-game ODI series, which will be held in Baroda on January 11.

As previously clarified, his selection has been made subject to certain conditions. When recently announcing the ODI squad, the BCCI had stated that Shreyas Iyer's fitness would be assessed at the Centre of Excellence and he would only join the ODI squad if found fit. According to a Cricbuzz report on Sunday, there is a strong chance he will be fully fit. The first ODI will be played in Baroda on January 11.
If Shreyas Iyer is cleared for fitness to return to international cricket, the MCA will have to appoint a new captain for the knockout matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. The knockout matches will be played from January 12.
MCA Secretary Unmesh Khanvilkar said, "We will take a decision once the situation becomes clear. For now, Shreyas will captain the team in the remaining two league matches." Shreyas Iyer has been out of cricket for the past three months. He suffered a spleen injury after falling while attempting a catch in the third ODI in Sydney during the Australia tour, following which he had to undergo surgery in Australia.
