The sixth match of the 19th Indian Premier League season was held between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), who have won the IPL three times, and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), the champion team in 2016. The match venue was Eden Gardens in Kolkata. One of the opening batsmen of Hyderabad, Abhishek Sharma, performed exceptionally well in the match, although something happened during his dismissal that gave rise to an interesting controversy.

Abhishek Sharma's dismissal became the talk of the town. Sharma scored some fantastic shots and was almost on track to score 50 runs, but he failed to do so due to a dramatic catch during his outstanding innings. He attempted a massive shot off Blessing Muzarabani, but Varun Chakravarthy, stationed at deep midwicket, made a sensational catch.

Abhishek appeared displeased with the decision. He walked back to the pavilion, shaking his head and expressing his disagreement with the umpire's decision. After the match, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) took a firm stance. Abhishek was fined 25 percent of his match fee and also handed a demerit point.

Abhishek admitted to a Level 1 offence under Article 2.3 of the IPL Code of Conduct and accepted the sanction imposed by the match referee. The official statement issued by the IPL did not specify why Abhishek was sanctioned. However, Section 2.3 primarily relates to the use of foul language or abusive language during a match.
