The first match of the three-match ODI series being played between India and Sri Lanka was played at the Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo. This match was tied. Despite this, the super-over was not played. Usually, when the match is tied, a one-over match is played to get the result of the match. Which we call super over. But this did not happen in this match. Let us know the rules and provisions related to the super over through this news.

According to the rules of the International Cricket Council (ICC), whenever a T20 match is tied, the super over is resorted to to get the result of the match. But there is no such rule for ODI cricket. In ODIs, the rules are different for each series. The provision of super over in ODI cricket is largely kept only for the knockout matches of multi-nation tournaments.

In the history of cricket, the super over has been used in only three ODI matches. The first was in the final of the ODI World Cup played in 2019. In this match played between New Zealand and England, the super over was also tied and in the end England was declared the champion on the basis of boundary count. Which was later heavily criticized.

Apart from this, the ODI match played between Zimbabwe and Pakistan at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium in 2020 is the only bilateral ODI match in which a super over took place. This happened because this rule was decided before the start of the series between the two countries. As we told the rules are different for every series. The last super over in an ODI match took place last year during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 qualifier match between West Indies and Netherlands.
