The Mystery of Kakanmath Temple in Morena: 1,000-Year-Old Structure Built Without Cement
Ghost Built Temple: The Kakanmath Temple in Morena, Madhya Pradesh, is nothing short of a wonder. Built without cement and lime, this 100-foot-tall temple still stands in its original state. Find out if it was truly built by ghosts in one night.
In Morena, there is a temple where there is a mystery that even the best engineers cannot solve. This temple is from the 11th century, and it has no cement, clay, or lime. It is just placed on stones, resting on other stones. It is 100 feet high, and it appears as though it is going to fall at any time. However, it has been standing for the last 1,000 years, even during the stormiest of weather. It is said that ghosts constructed this temple overnight, leaving it halfway done, and then departed before dawn. Was this a miracle, or was it just the work of ancient architects?
The Kakanmath Temple is a temple for Lord Shiva. What is most striking is the construction of the temple. It has been constructed using dry stone masonry, meaning you can see through the stones. It seems as if someone had simply built such a tall temple using Lego blocks. People say that the stones in this temple seem to sway in the wind, yet the temple itself doesn't move from its place.
Village elders say that this temple was built not by humans, but by ghosts and invisible forces. It is said that these forces began construction in a single night. They continued adding stones, but as soon as the first rays of dawn appeared, the ghosts had to abandon their work and flee. Due to dawn, they were unable to complete the upper part and the surrounding areas of the temple. This is why even today the temple appears incomplete, with its stones scattered.

There is another interesting story associated with the temple. It is said that King Kirtiraj of the Kachchhapaghata dynasty wanted to build this temple. Lord Shiva appeared in his dream and told him that the temple would be completed in one night, but on the condition that no one would witness its construction. The king announced in the entire village that no one should leave their homes. However, a small child's curiosity overpowered him. He sneaked a peek out of the window. As soon as the spirits realized they had been spotted, they stopped the work. The temple remained as it was.
According to records, it was built by King Kirtiraj in the 11th century. It was a large temple, surrounded by several smaller temples. According to the Archaeological Survey of India, severe earthquakes and external attacks over time caused the surrounding temples to collapse, and the outer structure of the main temple collapsed. The portion we see today is the sanctum sanctorum and the main spire. The precise balance of the stones is the reason it remains standing today, even without any joints.
Whether you believe in ghost stories or science, the Kakanmath Temple will leave you awestruck. It still stands proudly in a desolate area of Morena. Visitors still wonder how such heavy stones could have been set so high and without any support, without the use of modern machinery.
