Damien Martyn Shows Rapid Recovery, Doctors Hope to Move Him Out of ICU
Damien Martyn Health Update: In a statement issued by Martyn's family, close friend Adam Gilchrist said, "The last 48 hours have seen an incredible turn of events. He is now able to talk and respond to treatment. He has responded exceptionally well since coming out of the coma, to the point where his family considers it a miracle."
Specialists are hoping to be able to discharge former Australian cricketer Damien Martyn from the ICU soon. Martyn, who had been battling meningitis, is recovering swiftly. Martyn, who is 54 years old, is out of his coma and is able to talk to his loved ones. Martyn was hospitalized in a hospital on the Gold Coast on the day of the Boxing Day Test.

Since coming out of the coma, he has responded exceptionally well, to the point where his family believes it's a miracle.
Gilchrist said, "It's been so positive that they hope he'll be able to move from the ICU to another part of the hospital, which shows how well his recovery has been and how quickly his situation has changed. He's in good spirits and overwhelmed by the support he's received. Some treatment and monitoring remains, but the situation looks positive."

His wife, Amanda, has reported that Martin's treatment is progressing well. Speaking to News Corp, Amanda said, "Damien Martin's treatment is progressing well and he's progressing in the right direction. We want to thank everyone for the support our family has received during this time. We also want to thank the staff at Gold Coast University Hospital for their support during this time."
Martin has accumulated 4406 runs from 109 innings in 67 test matches with an astonishing average of 46.38. He has aggregated 13 centuries and 23 half-centuries during this period. In ODI cricket, he has aggregated 5346 runs from 182 innings in 208 games with an average of 40.81. He has hit five centuries and 37 half-centuries. Martin has also played four international T20 matches. During this he has scored 120 runs at an average of 30. Here too he has scored one half-century. Martin retired during the Ashes series in 2006 and later became a commentator, but most of the time he kept a low profile.
