The development comes as Pakistan is struggling to shore up its cash-strapped economy with the help of the International Monetary Fund, which has agreed to provide a loan of US$3 billion.
The project was initially conceived as an India–Pakistan–Iran gas pipeline, but later, India abandoned it and became a bilateral project between Pakistan and Iran.
Sanctions imposed on Iran by the US over its nuclear program have prevented Pakistan from building the pipeline.
