Over the Atlantic Ocean, US fighter jets shoot down a Chinese balloon

Local US media said on Saturday that three US airports were closed as part of a "national security effort" and that a suspected Chinese spy balloon was shot down off the country's east coast.

The Pentagon reported on Friday that the Chinese balloon, which was about the size of three buses, had been monitored in US airspace. The Chinese aircraft is thought to be capable of surveillance.

As a protest against China's entry into US airspace, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken cancelled his upcoming historic trip to Beijing.

China expressed sorrow that a "airship" had entered US airspace on Friday and claimed that it was flying over the country for scientific and meteorological research.

On Saturday, US President Joe Biden released a short statement saying that "we will take care of it." Both the White House and the Pentagon said that the Chinese balloon does not present a military or physical threat to people on the ground.
