The long-term stay of former Chief Justice DY Chandrachud in the government bungalow has become a point of controversy now. The Supreme Court administration has sent a letter to the Central Government, requesting that the bungalow at 5, Krishna Menon Marg be vacated forthwith. The bungalow is the official residence of the Chief Justice of the nation. Chandrachud retired in November 2024, but continues to reside there.

The Supreme Court has written a letter to the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry on July 1, saying that former Chief Justice of the country Chandrachud is staying in the bungalow for more than the time. According to the rule, after retirement, the former Chief Justice can stay in a type-seven bungalow for six months. But Chandrachud has been living in a type-eight bungalow for eight months, which is a violation of the rules.

On this issue, Chandrachud said that this delay was due to his family reasons. He said that his two daughters need special care and it was not easy for him to find a suitable house. The government has given them a second house on rent, which is being repaired. He will shift as soon as the repair is completed.

Interestingly, when Chandrachud retired, two Chief Justice Justice Sanjeev Khanna and present Chief Justice BR Gavai declined the bungalow on Krishna Menon Marg. Both opted to stay in their own old house. Therefore, Chandrachud received easy to obtain additional time in the bungalow.

Chandrachud was already allowed by the Supreme Court to keep the bungalow by April 2025. Later, by May 2025, orally also was also received. But now that time has also passed. The Supreme Court has made it clear that no longer can be waited because many judges need housing.

Chandrachud said that he fully realizes his responsibilities. He clarified that he would leave the bungalow in a few days. He also said that earlier many former Chief Justices have also been given additional time in view of the circumstances. He has already shared this issue with the Supreme Court administration.

This case is also under discussion because such a few has been seen in the history of the Supreme Court when the court has to say in writing to the Central Government to vacate its official residence. Usually in such cases, the solution inside is taken out. But in the current situation, the court had to take strict steps, which has made the matter more in the headlines.
