Odisha: Stampede due to huge crowd of devotees in Shri Jagannath temple of Puri, 10 people injured

A stampede-like situation occurred at Shri Jagannath Temple in Puri on Friday due to the huge crowd of devotees. In which at least 10 devotees were injured and they were taken to the district headquarters hospital here for treatment.

Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) chief administrator Ranjan Kumar Das said the huge crowd of devotees was responsible for the early morning incident. The Hindu month of Kartik is considered sacred and a large number of devotees visit the 12th century temple to have darshan of Lord Jagannath. Most of the injured include elderly people. Das said that we are making arrangements to ensure a smooth darshan of devotees inside the temple.

According to preliminary information, devotees were allowed inside after the Mangala Aarti was completed. However, a stampede-like situation arose in the temple due to the entry of a huge crowd. Devotees said the incident occurred near the bell gate and Satpahacha inside the temple when all the devotees waiting outside were allowed to enter at one time.
