Indian Premier League 2026 Begins Amid Ticket Black Marketing Scandal
IPL 2026, Mumbai Ticket Scam: A major ticket black marketing scandal has emerged ahead of the start of IPL 2026, with the Mumbai Police busting a racket involved in the black marketing of tickets for the ICC T20 World Cup semi-final.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 is set to begin on Saturday, March 28th. The first match is scheduled to be played between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad. However, just before the start of this major cricket tournament, shocking news has emerged regarding ticket black marketing related to the ICC T20 World Cup.
The Mumbai Police have taken major action in the case of ticket black marketing for the ICC T20 World Cup semi-final match, which was played between India and England at the Wankhede Stadium on March 5th. In this case, police have arrested 26-year-old Balwant Singh Sodha, who once played for Mumbai's Under-19 team and was recently involved in coaching. Police investigations have revealed that Sodha was the key link in the entire network and was responsible for supplying tickets.
According to the investigation, tickets for the semi-final match were sold at high prices, ranging from ₹25,000 to ₹35,000. A total of six people have been arrested in this case so far. These include a college sports teacher, a non-teaching staff member, and other associates.

Sources believe that these tickets may have been complimentary passes issued to members and guests of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) or its affiliated clubs. The accused obtained these tickets illegally and began selling them on the black market.
Police investigations have also revealed that some tickets were sold directly to customers, while many were transacted through social media platforms. This provides an insight into the network's reach and systematic operation.
Balwant Singh Sodha was produced in court on Thursday, where he was remanded in police custody. Currently, a team from Mumbai's DB Marg police station is conducting a thorough investigation into the entire network and is searching for other accused.
Bengaluru police have tightened security measures ahead of the first IPL match at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, urging people not to come to the stadium without valid tickets. Police have clarified that crowds will not be allowed to gather outside the stadium and strict checking will be carried out. Months of preparations have been underway to ensure a safe and smooth match, including mock drills, coordination between various departments, crowd control, traffic management, and emergency services. Metro and bus services have been increased for the convenience of spectators, and parking and shuttle bus arrangements have also been made. Police have appealed to the public for cooperation so that the event can be conducted without any disruptions.
