The International Olympic Committee has made a huge announcement. According to the new rule set by the International Olympic Committee and released on Thursday, transgender women will not be allowed to participate in women’s events. From now on, only biologically female athletes will be allowed to participate in women’s events in the Olympic Games and any other International Olympic Committee events.

This new rule has been set based on science and aims to ensure fairness and equality for female athletes. This new rule will be implemented in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. It should be noted that this new rule has been discussed for a long time.

According to the new policy, athletes' eligibility to participate in the women's category will be determined by a one-time SRY gene screening test. This test examines a region of DNA typically associated with male development. The test will only need to be performed once in a lifetime, making it easy and minimally invasive for athletes. The IOC states that it is the most accurate and least intrusive method currently available.

This policy is the result of a review conducted from September 2024 to March 2026. Extensive discussions were held with medical experts, scientists, and experts in related fields. The primary goal of the review was to ensure fair play in the women's category. The IOC clarified that this policy will only apply to Olympic and IOC events. It is not retroactive, meaning it will not affect past events. Furthermore, it does not apply to grassroots or general sports events.

IOC President Kirsty Coventry, herself a former athlete, commented on the policy, saying, "As a former athlete, I strongly believe in the right of all Olympians to fair competition. This policy is based on science and developed under the guidance of medical experts."

She added, "Winning and losing at the Olympic Games is decided by very small margins. Therefore, it would not be fair for biological males to compete in the women's category. In some sports, it would not even be safe." Coventry also added that every athlete will be treated with respect and dignity. Clear education will be provided about the screening process, and counseling and medical advice will be provided if needed.
