Capt Amarinder Singh Will Merge His Party With BJP: Claims BJP Leader

CHANDIGARH: Former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh may merge his party Punjab Lok Congress (PLC) with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after returning from London. BJP leader Harjit Singh Grewal made this claim on Saturday. Amarinder is recuperating in London after spinal surgery. The BJP is yet to say anything officially regarding the merger of his party, but the senior leader of the party's Punjab unit Grewal claimed on Saturday that a decision has been taken in this regard. Grewal said that before going to London, Amarinder had expressed his intention to merge his party with the BJP.

He said that Amarinder would announce the merger of PLC with the BJP after his return from London. Amarinder, a two-time chief minister of Punjab, quit the Congress last year after stepping down from the chief minister's post and forming the PLC.

The PLC contested the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections in alliance with the BJP and the Shiromani Akali Dal (United) led by Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa. However, none of the PLC candidates could register a victory. Amarinder himself lost the election from the Patiala Urban seat.
