Shanaya Sharma appointed National General Secretary at BJMC Women's Wing general meeting in Kolkata
The Women's Wing of the Bharatiya Janata Mazdoor Cell (BJMC), West Bengal, organised a general meeting at Uttam Mancha in Kolkata on Saturday, bringing together hundreds of women workers from organised and unorganised sectors across the state. The gathering focused on strengthening women's participation in labour welfare initiatives and expanding the organisation's grassroots outreach.
A major highlight of the meeting was the formal appointment of Bollywood actress, producer, social activist, youth leader, and philanthropist Shanaya Sharma as the National General Secretary of the BJMC Women's Wing. The organisation said her appointment reflects its commitment to promoting stronger women's leadership while amplifying issues affecting women workers across India.
The programme was presided over by Dr. Monuwari Begum, National President of the BJMC Women's Wing and Member of the National Commission for Minorities, Government of India, along with Dr. Arnab Chatterjee, National President of the Bharatiya Janata Mazdoor Cell.
Senior BJMC leaders present included Armaan Ganguly, National Vice President; Deepak Sharma, National Youth President; Mrs. Maya Bag, National General Secretary of the Women's Wing; Washim Ahamed, State General Secretary, West Bengal; State Vice Presidents S. N. Das, Debojit Kar, and Mrinmoy Dhar; Manotosh Deb, State General Secretary; Nirmal Mondal, National Coordinator; and Gopal Shaw, State Secretary, West Bengal, besides social activists and women worker representatives.
Addressing the gathering after assuming office, Shanaya Sharma said West Bengal holds a special place in her life and pledged to work for the welfare of women workers.

"Bengal is my spiritual home because Maa Bhagwati and Mahakali represent the strength of Nari Shakti. Every person of Bengal is my family. As I assume this responsibility, I promise to work for the people of Bengal and for every Indian. Your happiness and hardships are now my own. Guided by the principle of 'Shramev Jayate', we will soon submit a charter of demands to the Labour Commissioner covering workplace safety, fair wages, and social security for women workers," she said.
The meeting also witnessed important organisational appointments. Manpreet Singh Gerwal was named State Youth President of BJMC West Bengal, while several District Presidents were appointed to strengthen the organisation's presence across districts.
Delegates adopted resolutions to launch district-level awareness campaigns, skill development programmes, and legal aid centres for women employed in tea gardens, construction, domestic work, and other unorganised sectors. The initiatives are aimed at improving awareness of labour rights, access to welfare schemes, and economic empowerment.
Dr. Monuwari Begum reaffirmed the organisation's commitment to labour justice, saying, "The BJMC Women's Wing is committed to ensuring dignity of labour and economic justice. With Shanaya Sharma joining our national leadership, we will take Bengal's voice to every platform."
BJMC National President Dr. Arnab Chatterjee emphasised that workers remain central to the nation's development.
"Workers are the backbone of the nation. BJMC will work with the government and industry to ensure that 'Shramev Jayate' becomes a reality and not merely a slogan," he said.
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to expanding BJMC's grassroots initiatives and strengthening support for women workers through legal assistance, skill development, social security advocacy, and awareness programmes across West Bengal and other parts of the country.
