Indian Army initiated the mission of relief and rescue with utmost haste immediately after the crash at Ahmedabad involving Air India last month. Over 150 army personnel reached the scene in no time after the crash. During this, engineering, medical, fire brigade, and quick reaction team (QRT) personnel reached the spot and handled the situation.

In a high-level program organized in Pune, Southern Army Commander Lieutenant General Dheeraj Seth said that now disaster management is not a one-time task. This has become an important part of our operational preparedness, which we not only have to plan, but also train and implement well.

General Seth said that within minutes of the crash landing of Air India AI-171 in Ahmedabad, the army personnel reached the spot and started the relief operation. In the accident, the plane collided with the wall of B.K. Medical College. In such a situation, the army immediately broke the wall and made a way to safely evacuate the people trapped inside, which saved many lives.

The Army Chief said that the number and severity of natural disasters have increased rapidly in the last few years. Floods in Assam, landslides in Himachal and Wayanad, cloudbursts in Uttarakhand, and storms on the seashore have posed a big challenge to the country. In 2024, India suffered a loss of about $ 12 billion due to natural disasters, which is much more than the average loss of the last 10 years.

He said that the Army Engineer Corps has played an important role in relief operations in the country and internationally. During the floods in Wayanad, a team of 200 soldiers built a 130-foot-long Bailey Bridge in less than 48 hours, which helped re-establish the broken connection between two villages. This bridge remains the lifeline of the people there even today.

Lt. Gen Seth said that disaster management is not limited to the human aspect only. It has become a matter directly related to the national security of the country. The preparation and readiness of the army are very important not only in disaster relief, but also in strengthening the security of the country and the confidence of the public.
