Cyber Criminals Using AI Tools to Target Aadhaar Security: Rajasthan Police

The Cyber Crime Branch of the Rajasthan Police has released an advisory to the general public about some cyber frauds happening because of the use of artificial intelligence technology and deepfakes. The criminals are now even targeting the biometrics-based Aadhaar system by using various artificial intelligence tools such as Google Gemini, ChatGPT, Grok, and more. According to VK Singh, the Additional Director General of Police for Cyber Crime, the fraudsters gather details of individuals such as their Aadhaar number, pictures, and cell phone details from data breaches, phishing, and social engineering techniques. Once the mobile number is updated, the OTPs reach the criminals, allowing them to take control of banking, DigiLocker, and other digital accounts.

According to the police, criminals are now using AI-based deepfake technology to create fake videos and faces. The eye movements and facial expressions in these videos appear so realistic that even many face authentication systems are fooled. This could be used for e-KYC, opening fake bank accounts, and illegal transactions.

The Rajasthan Police has urged people to lock their Aadhaar biometrics by visiting the mAadhaar app or the UIDAI's official website. Locking biometrics prevents the misuse of fingerprint and iris data.

It is also advised to regularly check the Aadhaar authentication history on the UIDAI portal to identify where and when Aadhaar has been used.
