Bangladesh Cricket Board Exit from ICC T20 World Cup 2026 Under Fresh Probe
Bangladesh T20 World Cup snub row: The controversy surrounding Bangladesh's exclusion from the T20 World Cup is deepening. A new investigation by the Bangladesh Sports Ministry has yet to be completed, and the BCB is demanding the dissolution of the inquiry committee.
Bangladesh did not participate in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. This has given way to new developments. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has asked the Sports Ministry to stop the inquiry committee. However, the Sports Ministry has decided to start a new inquiry. State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Islam announced that a new inquiry committee will be formed. This committee will look into the matter and see if the decision not to participate in the tournament, which will be held in India and Sri Lanka, was due to problems faced in sports diplomacy.
It should be noted that, after discussions with the International Cricket Council (ICC) several times, the BCB was firm in their stance. Ultimately, Bangladesh was expelled from the competition and Scotland was included in its place. Explaining the rationale behind the new investigation, Islam indicated that the ministry wanted to understand more clearly whether the decision to withdraw from the tournament could have been avoided.
He said, "I have already discussed these issues: why we were unable to participate in the Cricket World Cup and where exactly our shortcomings in sports diplomacy lay. These are matters that we must thoroughly investigate." He further stated that the new investigation committee, which is likely to be formed after Eid, will assess whether this incident has exposed deeper shortcomings in Bangladesh's system for handling international sports relations.

He said, "In my opinion, we need to further strengthen our sports diplomacy. Because sports is a platform where we can rise above our differences and political ideologies and unite as a nation. We must ensure that such mistakes do not happen again." This latest move comes just a day after the BCB requested the ministry to close the previous investigation. This development further highlights the growing rift between the board and the government.
Islam also linked this extensive investigation to complaints received from various stakeholders regarding alleged irregularities in the previous BCB elections. He indicated that governance-related concerns may also have played a role in the current situation. "We received numerous complaints from stakeholders, clubs, and district levels. Considering these, we have formed an investigation committee and are awaiting its report."
He further stated that the panel has been tasked with consulting with all key stakeholders, including board officials, election officials, and district representatives, to assess the credibility of the process. While the results of both investigations are still pending, he confirmed that the ministry will also consult with the ICC before deciding on further action.
