Robin Uthappa Backs Hardik Pandya’s Return to Test Cricket Amid India’s WTC Struggles

The Indian team is in a bad condition in the World Test Championship of 2025-27. India has already played nine matches in this season and stands at the sixth position in the ranking table with four victories, four defeats, and one draw. In reference to the pathetic performance of Team India in the longest format of cricket, former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa made a statement saying that the comeback of Hardik Pandya to the Indian Test squad will prove to be a huge boost not only for the Indian team but for Hardik Pandya as well. The Baroda cricketer last played a test match in 2018, and since then, he has been restricting himself to only the white-ball variant of cricket.

In a video on his YouTube channel, Uthappa claimed that it would be great to see Hardik return as India's number 7 in Test cricket. He stated that if the all-rounder wants to play Test cricket, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will not stop him. Uthappa stated that all-rounders like Nitish Kumar Reddy are not currently bowling 20 overs. Given his current fitness, Hardik could easily bowl 12-15 overs, but he admitted that it depends on the all-rounder whether he wants to return to Test cricket.

He said that if Hardik Pandya continues playing the way he is, it would be great to see him return to the number 7 position in Test cricket. Anything can happen in cricket; never say never. If Hardik decides to play Test cricket, will the BCCI refuse? If he says he wants to play and win the World Test Championship (WTC), I don't think he'll say no.

I think they're asking him to prove his fitness. Are all the all-rounders bowling 20 overs? Nitish Reddy isn't bowling that much. He's bowling 12 overs. If he needs to bowl 12-15 overs per innings, I think he can do that based on his current fitness.

It's worth noting that Hardik has been injured in the past, which is why he's decided to stay away from Tests. However, his return to Test cricket will certainly help India, as they haven't yet found a suitable replacement.
