However, Lionel Messi's preparation for the debut match against Algeria in the FIFA World Cup was different from the normal. The 38-year-old footballer said he saw the documentary of Rafael Nadal on Netflix prior to the match. In that same game, Messi ended up scoring three goals which tied his name alongside Miroslav Klose's for being the top scorer of all time in the World Cup.
In a situation where one is already accustomed to winning every trophy in the sports arena, entering his sixth World Cup could be very rare. Messi was influenced by Nadal's documentary and became inspired by his struggles.
Playing his 200th game for Argentina against Algeria in Group J, Messi brushed aside all thoughts of age and injury and displayed great confidence and energy on the pitch.
After scoring a record-equalling hat-trick, Messi said, "I've loved playing football since childhood, and when I feel good, I give it my all." He added, "I've been watching Rafa Nadal's documentary. I think we're very similar in that regard. I want to feel good, and if I'm in good shape, I'll keep playing."
