Sarpreet Singh Creates History, Becomes First Indian-Origin Footballer to Play in a FIFA World Cup Match
FIFA World Cup: New Zealand midfielder Sarpreet Singh has become the first Indian-origin player to start in a FIFA World Cup. He performed brilliantly in the 2-2 draw against Iran.

A historical moment has been created by Sarpreet Singh of New Zealand. He has become the first Indian-origin player to play a World Cup match for any team. This happened during the match between New Zealand and Iran in Los Angeles, which ended in a 2-2 tie.
Sarpreet Singh, who was selected as a starter by Coach Darren Basley, played most part of the match before leaving the ground in the 90th minute. His parents belong to Punjab and have strong ties with India. It was due to his efforts that New Zealand made it to the World Cup after being absent from this tournament since 2010. Apart from football, Sarpreet Singh has played for Bayern Munich in Germany. He claims to be an Indian at heart and fond of Punjabi culture. He follows Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar in cricket.
Playing in the number 10 jersey, Sarpreet played a key role in midfield. He had three shots against Iran, including a 61st-minute effort that was saved by the goalkeeper. He was active in the central midfield in New Zealand's 4-2-3-1 formation.
Sarpreet Singh also played against India in the 2018 Intercontinental Cup in Mumbai. During that time, he was part of New Zealand's U-23 team and scored a goal against Kenya and provided two assists against India.
