Nobel laureate in Belarus jailed for 10 years

A court in Belarus on Friday sentenced Nobel Peace Prize winner Ales Bialiatsky to 10 years in prison. Apart from him, three more people have also been punished for funding the protests against the government.
The government arrested all four after the demonstrations in 2020. They were protesting against the election of Alexander Lukashenko as the President of Belarus. Lukashenko has been President since 1994. There are allegations against him that he comes to power again and again by weakening the opposition through illegal means.
Last year in 2022, the Nobel Committee awarded him the Nobel Peace Prize. The committee said that the government of Belarus tried for years to suppress his protest, he had to go to jail many times, and even his job was snatched from him.
Svetlana, the leader of the opposition living outside the country, has termed the punishment meted out to Ales as shameful. He said that every effort should be made to bring justice to Ailes.
Ailes got the Nobel Peace Prize for getting Lukashanko out of power. He is considered close to Putin. He is openly supporting Russia even in the Ukraine war. There are allegations against Lukashenko that he has so far kept 1458 political prisoners in jail by illegal means. Lukashenko is quite famous as the last dictator of Europe.
