Decision in the Supreme Court on the appointment process of EC-CEC today

The Supreme Court is likely to pronounce its verdict today on a petition related to the appointment process of the Election Commission (EC) and the Chief Election Commission (CEC). A 5-judge bench headed by Justice KM Joseph is hearing the case on the appointment of CEC through a collegium-like system.
Justice Ajay Rastogi, Justice Aniruddha Bose, Justice Hrishikesh Roy and Justice CT Ravikumar are also included in this bench. The court had reserved its decision on this issue in the last hearing.
In the last hearing, the Supreme Court questioned the appointment process of CEC and EC. The court had asked the Center for the appointment file of judges in the matter. Following the court's order, the central government handed over the original file of the appointment of Election Commissioner Arun Goyal to the Supreme Court.
After going through the file, the court told the Center – the file regarding the appointment of the Election Commissioner was cleared with lightning speed. What an assessment. The question is not about his qualification. We are questioning the appointment process.
Actually, 1985 batch IAS Arun Goyal had taken VRS on November 18 from the post of Industries Secretary. He was to retire from this post on 31 December. Goyal was appointed as the Election Commissioner on 19 November. He will be part of the Election Commission along with Chief Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar and Election Commissioner Anoop Chandra Pandey.
Senior advocate Prashant Bhushan has questioned this appointment by filing a petition. The Supreme Court has started hearing on this matter since Tuesday. Thursday is the third day of the hearing.
The court is hearing a petition filed on October 23, 2018, on the process of appointment of CEC and EC. It was said in the petition that like the CBI director or the Lokpal, the Center unilaterally appoints the members of the Election Commission. The petition has demanded a collegium system for these appointments.
The court made these important observations while hearing a petition filed on October 23, 2018, on the process of appointment of CEC and EC under the collegium system. It was said in the petition that like the CBI director or the Lokpal, the Center unilaterally appoints the members of the Election Commission. On Tuesday, a bench of Justices Ajay Rastogi, Aniruddha Bose, Hrishikesh Roy and CT Ravikumar was hearing the matter.
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court reprimanded the government regarding the appointment process of the country's Chief Election Commissioner, ie CEC. The court noted that after TN Seshan, who was the CEC between 1990 and 1996, no Chief Election Commissioner got a chance to complete his tenure. Has it happened because the government knows the date of birth of the person to be made CEC? Not only during the present government, but it has been happening during the UPA government also.
