Indian team Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar's term is set to expire in September 2026. After winning the 2026 T20 World Cup, it was said that he asked for more time until the 2027 ODI World Cup. But it is said that Agarkar didn’t make such a request. His future will be determined when his contract expires at the end of this year. It should be noted that Agarkar was appointed the Chairman of the Senior Men's Selection Committee in 2023. His contract was extended for one year after India won the 2024 T20 World Cup and the Champions Trophy.

After winning the 2026 T20 World Cup, it was said that Agarkar had personally asked the BCCI for an extension until the next ODI World Cup. However, a senior board official categorically denied these rumors, stating that no such discussions had taken place and that discussions on the matter would only begin after Agarkar's term ends in September 2026.

The BCCI official stated that there was no reason for Agarkar to request an extension on his own, as the constitution allows a senior selector to hold his position for four years. The selection committee is a subcommittee of the BCCI, and the selectors' contracts are valid only until September of this year. He further stated that Ajit Agarkar's contract expires in September, and after that, the board secretary and Ajit will have to decide whether he will continue in his position until next year's ODI World Cup.

Ajit Agarkar is credited with making some tough decisions and ensuring a smooth transition to Test cricket following the retirements of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin. India won three ICC white-ball trophies under Agarkar's leadership, but Test results have been disappointing. India lost two home series against New Zealand and South Africa.

After India won the Under-19 World Cup earlier this month, head coach Gautam Gambhir credited Agarkar, saying his hard work was the key to the team's victory. In the post-match press conference, Gambhir told reporters that Ajit Agarkar often faces criticism, but the dedication with which he has worked is truly remarkable.
