The Indian automotive industry has grown a lot, and the Tata Sierra is India’s first SUV. It was launched in 1991 and is considered one of the first SUVs in India. It is based on the Tata Telcoline pickup.
When the Tata Sierra was launched in 1991, it had a 2.0-liter diesel engine with 68 hp. Later, a turbo petrol engine with 90 hp was also added. It had a 5-speed manual transmission. Its robust body and good suspension made it suitable for the roads in India.
Tata Sierra is a three-door vehicle, and it is quite unique in design. Its biggest highlight was its large rear glass panel, which set it apart from other vehicles. Additionally, its high ground clearance, wide body, and powerful front grille gave it a true SUV look.

It offered ample passenger space (a spacious cabin). The car featured comfortable seats, power windows, AC, an adjustable steering wheel, and a tachometer. Furthermore, the large rear glass windows allowed for ample light and a spacious feel.
It featured power steering and an improved dashboard design. While these features may seem commonplace today, they were considered quite advanced. In terms of safety, it featured a robust ladder-frame chassis and a strong body structure, providing basic passenger safety.
At its launch in 1991, its price was around ₹500,000 to ₹600,000, which was considered affordable at the time. However, production of this vehicle was discontinued in 2003. This vehicle played a major role in increasing the popularity of SUVs in India and paved the way for many vehicles to come.
