Tazmin Brits lost her father in Covid, now wants to play World Cup for mother battling cancer
ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024: Tazmin Brits' dream of playing the Olympics was shattered in a car accident in December 2011, but Tazmin did not give up and started playing cricket. Now she is going to represent South Africa in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup.
Tazmin Brits won a gold medal in the Youth World Championship in Javelin Throw and was also in her country's Olympic team but fate had something else planned for her. Due to her car accident in December 2011, her dream of playing in the Olympics was shattered, however, she did not give up and started playing cricket. She will now represent South Africa in the International Cricket Council Women's T20 World Cup. But Tazmin's greatest strength who is her mother, will not be present to encourage her. Only two weeks ago, Tazmin's mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. She stated in an interview that the struggle will never end, but I now know how to deal with it. You must keep moving forward, or the world will swallow you up.
After losing her father to Covid in 2021, her mother is everything for Tazmin. Her mother supported her at every step. Tazmin said, it was my mother and father who inspired me to live again during my bad times. It was because of them that I could make a career in cricket. Tazmin said, even though mother will not be here during the World Cup, I want to do my best here for her.
Everything felt over when I had a car accident in 2011. I was broken. I was so desperate that I used to think of committing suicide," said the now 33-year-old Tazmin, During this time, I met cricket coach François; he advised me to play cricket. I had played cricket previously, so this game was not new to me. However, I had to learn a lot.
Tazmin, who till now has represented South Africa in 57 T20 matches, said in an interaction at the Vizzy Stadium here, "Initially I did not even have a cricket kit, but I started playing. After a few matches, I scored well and then selected in the team and now in the South African cricket team.".
However, Tazmin, who played 28 ODIs, has not stopped dreaming of the Olympics. The tattoo of Olympic rings is there on the arm. "Hopefully, I can still go to the Olympics, that's what I'm thinking," says Tazmin. But then, the dream is at least 4 years away from reality. Besides, another factor is that cricket too has been included in the Los Angeles Olympics due in 2028.
