The first game of the two-match Test series between India and South Africa is underway at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The second day of the match saw the Indian team receive a major jolt as skipper Shubman Gill had to retire hurt with neck spasms. Now, there has been an update on his condition. Reports suggest that Shubman Gill has been taken to a private city hospital amidst concerns about his injury. According to sources in the hospital, Shubman is still feeling partial discomfort in his neck, owing to which he will be kept under observation overnight, and further evaluation will be carried out on him.

It is relevant here to note that BCCI officials had said even earlier that his condition was being continuously monitored by the medical team. Whether he will be able to play for the remainder of the second day's play will be decided based on his condition.

Shubman Gill came in to bat at number four in India's first innings. He experienced neck discomfort and was forced to retire hurt. Gill began experiencing neck discomfort even before the start of the second day's play. Previously, Gill experienced neck stiffness while playing against New Zealand in October 2024, forcing him to withdraw from the match.

In Shubman Gill's absence, vice-captain Rishabh Pant led the Indian team on the second day of the first Test against South Africa. The visitors were 93 for 7 in their second innings at the close of play on the second day.
