Quality rule of footwear is not yet implemented, it may take 6 months

From July 1, the government has implemented the quality rule on footwear issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), but the implementation of this rule has not started yet. Footwear with a BIS mark is yet to come on the market.
Footwear manufacturers told on the condition of anonymity that the standard for quality control of daily used footwear has not yet been decided.
A meeting was held on Friday between footwear manufacturers and BIS officials regarding the standards of daily use of footwear. According to footwear manufacturers, it will take six months for the quality control norms of BIS to be implemented. From last July 1, the rule of quality control has been implemented only on safety-related footwear, army, and snow footwear.
Footwear manufacturers said that under the quality control rule, they have to obtain a license from BIS to manufacture footwear and the process itself takes three to four months. The manufacturers told that anyway after the implementation of the rule, six months time is given to follow it.
On June 14, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said that the quality norms issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) regarding footwear would come into effect from July 1.
From July 1, this rule was to be applicable to footwear manufacturers with an annual turnover of more than 50 crores. Manufacturers with an annual turnover of less than Rs 50 crore and more than Rs 5 crore will have to comply with the quality norms from January 1, 2024, while manufacturers with a turnover of less than Rs 5 crore will have to comply with the quality norms from July next year. According to the industry, the footwear business in the country is worth Rs 80,000 crore.
