Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav launched a series of new initiatives on Thursday on the occasion of one-year anniversary of India's mission to develop AI. They include the India AI Compute Portal and AI Kosh Data Set Platform. These steps aim to enhance AI innovation in India and facilitate access to technology.

This new gateway in the cloud will provide access to more than 18,000 GPUs, cloud storage, and other AI services to researchers, startups, students, academics, and government departments. With this, the groundwork is being laid to develop India's own foundational model. Vaishnav said 67 applications have been received for this.

Citing the example of the Chandrayaan mission, he said that India landed on the moon at a very low cost and under this strategy, it will also develop its foundational model, which will be much less expensive than other countries.

AI Kosh is an all-in-one data set platform, which will provide easy access to high-quality non-personal data. It will help AI model builders and developers to develop India-centric AI models. Tools, resources, and expert guidance will also be available on this platform so that new technical possibilities can be converted into industry solutions.

Vaishnav said that in the next 3-4 years, India will develop its own GPUs, which will compete globally. He also informed that these GPUs can be used in India at a very low cost (less than Rs 100 per hour).

Under the IndiaAI mission, MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan said that the Compute Portal is the largest component of this mission, and 45% of the total funds of the mission have been allocated for it. Apart from this, the government also launched a Competency Framework for AI and Public Sector Officials and the India AI Startups Global Acceleration Program. Students were awarded under the India AI Fellowship Program and 30 AI applications were given special recognition.

In March 2023, the Cabinet approved a budget of Rs 10,371.92 crore for the IndiaAI Mission. The mission has been launched to promote AI innovation through public-private partnership and is being implemented by the "IndiaAI" Independent Business Division (IBD) under the Digital India Corporation. It is worth noting that AI can play a big role in achieving the goal of developed India by 2047 and the IndiaAI Mission is an important step in this direction.
