Renowned cardiologist Dr. K M Cherian passed away, has been honored with many awards including Padma Shri

Dr. K M Cherian, who performed the first coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery in India about 50 years ago, has passed away. Cardiologist and renowned cardiac surgeon Dr. Cherian breathed his last on Saturday. He was 82 years old.

Dr. Cherian has been honored with many awards including the prestigious Padma Shri. As per Jagran, sources said on Sunday that he died after reportedly falling unconscious during a function in Bengaluru. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister MK Stalin have expressed grief over his death. The doctors and scientists of the country have also expressed grief over his demise.

The Prime Minister's Office posted on X, saddened by the demise of Dr. KM Cherian, one of the most respected doctors in the country. His contribution to cardiology will always be remembered. He not only saved the lives of many people but also guided doctors. His emphasis was always on technology.

PM Modi said that my condolences are with his family and friends in this hour of grief. Dr. Rajesh Rajan, Chairman of the Governing Board of the Indian Association of Clinical Cardiologists and President of the 'Association of MD Physicians' posted, condoles the death of Padma Shri Dr. Cherian. He performed the first CAGB surgery 50 years ago.
