World number one player Magnus Carlsen won the Blitz title with one round remaining on Sunday. In fact, with his brilliant performance, he also won the second trophy in the Tata Steel Chess India tournament. This 33-year-old Norwegian player had already won the Rapid title with his outstanding performance and scored 12 points before the final, which no one could reach.
He defeated Vidit Gujarati in the final round and won the tournament in brilliance down to the wire. With three wins at the trot and a full score of 13 points, Carlsen grabbed the 'Blitz' crown. Three-time women's world blitz champion Caterina Lagno again became the champion on Sunday. Starting only half a point ahead after the first day, Carlsen began the second day of the blitz event in the lead.
The Norwegian star stayed ahead even after drawing five successive matches on Sunday. Magnus' draw came against Praggnanandhaa, Wesley So, Abdusattorov Nodirbek, Vincent Keymer, and Nihal Sarin on Sunday. In the meantime, Indian young grandmaster Arjun Erigesi had the chance to surpass Carlsen, though he could not deliver in the last round of the tournament and lost three consecutive matches.
Due to this, Carlsen became the champion even before the final match. Wesley So remained second in the blitz event whereas Arjun Erigesi got third place. On the opposite end, in the women's category, Caterina Lagno performed strongly with 11.5 points and won the title. Valentina Gunina remained second whereas Alexandra Goryachkina remained third.
To continue ahead in the blitz round, Norway's Magnus Carlsen has been doing what he did after his win in the rapid event of this Tata Steel Chess Tournament. On Saturday, the first day of the blitz round saw Carlsen climb to the top with five wins out of nine games. He secured 6.5 points out of nine, drawing three games though he had to face defeat in one.
