Mystery of Ladakh’s Magnetic Hill: Why Vehicles Move Uphill on Their Own
Magnetic Hill in Ladakh is famous for its mysterious phenomenon where vehicles appear to move uphill on their own when parked in neutral gear. Located on the Leh-Kargil highway at an altitude of around 14,000 feet, the site attracts thousands of tourists every year. Despite popular myths about magnetic forces, scientists explain it as an optical illusion caused by the surrounding landscape and slope. Locals, however, connect the place with spiritual beliefs, making Magnetic Hill both a scientific curiosity and a cultural attraction.

At an elevation of around 14,000 feet in Ladakh, among the mountains of light and rugged terrain, there appears to be something miraculous: a place that even bends gravity. The magnetic bend of the Leh-Kargil-Srinagar highway has become the object of many discussions because of its strange name and equally odd nature.
It sounds like something right out of a fairy tale; automobiles actually go uphill by themselves even without engines running. Could there possibly be a giant magnet hiding under the earth at Magnetic Hill, or does it have anything to do with optical illusions?
The authorities have demarcated a point at Magnetic Hill. When tourists park their vehicles inside the box in neutral gear, the vehicle slowly begins to move upward at a speed of 10 to 20 km/h. This is natural for anyone to be surprised by, as gravity dictates that things should roll downward, not upward.
