India Maldives Relations: Maldives' Muizzu stands with China, yet India provided millions of dollars of help

The tension in the relations between India and the Maldives has increased dramatically since Mohammed Muizzu took office as president. The tense relationship between India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi had significantly worsened as a result of offensive remarks made by a few Muizzu government ministers regarding India.

Relations between the two countries then declined as a result of the Muizzu government's growing affinities with China. India has nevertheless shown the Maldives tremendous compassion and generosity by giving them $50 million in support. Rolling over the Treasury bills for an additional year has helped to provide this assistance. This month was the end of the bill's duration.

Maldives' Foreign Ministry said that the Indian government's decision to once again roll over the treasury bill has been taken after Foreign Minister Musa Jamir requested his Indian counterpart S Jaishankar. He was on a visit to India last week. During this period many issues were discussed. The ministry has praised India for its financial help. Many important projects are being carried out in Maldives with the help of India.
