Google is now requiring its remote employees that if they wish to continue employment and avoid disqualification by the company, they will have to come back to the office. According to a CNBC report, the tech giant has told staff members of several units that if they do not start working in their nearby office at least three days a week under a hybrid work schedule, their roles may be in danger.

A Google spokesperson told the outlet, "As we have said before, in-person collaboration is an important part of our innovation and solving complex problems." 'To support this, some teams have asked remote employees who live near the office to return to work in person three days a week.'

Remote employees in Google's technical services unit are being offered one-time relocation expenses to relocate within 50 miles of the office.

Five years on from when the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted work habits globally, Google has begun to tighten its grip. Google's move also comes at a time when the company and most of its tech competitors are slashing costs and investing billions of dollars in developing artificial intelligence (AI).

This year, Google started granting voluntary buyouts to certain US full-time workers as part of its efforts to cut costs. In December last year, California-based Google let 10 percent of its managerial workers go as part of an ongoing effort to become more efficient.

Alphabet-owned Google began its efficiency drive in September 2022, when CEO Sundar Pichai wrote an open letter to employees, saying he takes full responsibility for the current situation. He also said that the company had to take certain steps to maintain its earlier rapid growth, due to which these changes are being made now.

In the same meeting, Sundar Pichai also talked about transformation in corporate culture and the need to redefine 'Googleyness' - a vague term that has meant many things over the years, but is generally understood as the qualities Google looks for in potential employees.
