Central government is considering issuing 'pass', now you won't have to pay toll tax again and again
Toll Tax, Nitin Gadkari: Nitin Gadkari said that toll collection booths will be set up outside the villages so that the movement of villagers is not hindered. 74 percent of the toll revenue comes from commercial vehicles.

On Wednesday, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said that the government is considering introducing monthly and annual passes in lieu of toll collection from private vehicles on national highways, as the share of private vehicles in the total collection is only 26 percent. With this people are going to get relief from paying toll tax again and again soon. Further, Nitin Gadkari said that toll collection booths will be set up outside the villages so that the movement of villagers is not hindered. 74 percent of the toll revenue comes from commercial vehicles. We are considering introducing monthly or annual passes for private vehicles.
He said that the share of private vehicles in the total toll collection is only 26 percent, so the government will not suffer any loss. Gadkari said the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has decided to initially implement a barrier-free Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-based toll collection system as an additional facility along with FASTag on national highways.
The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-based toll collection system will be much superior as compared to the present toll collection system, he said. In July last year, Gadkari said a pilot study had been conducted on the Bengaluru-Mysuru section of National Highway (NH)-275 in Karnataka and the Panipat-Hisar section of NH-709 in Haryana regarding the GNSS-based user fee collection system.
This will avoid traffic congestion and charge according to the exact distance traveled on highways. The average waiting time of vehicles at toll plaza was eight minutes during FY 2018-19. Due to the introduction of FASTag, the average waiting time of vehicles has come down to 47 seconds during FY 2020-21 and 2021-22. Although waiting times have improved at some locations, especially in the densely populated towns near cities, there is still some delay at toll plazas during peak hours.
