Arsenal has signed Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon for 55 million pounds (roughly $74 million USD), which may include incentives of up to 8.5 million pounds. During his two seasons with Sporting, Viktor Gyokeres helped the team win two consecutive Primeira Liga titles, a national cup, and was the league's top scorer in both seasons. He has also performed well internationally, scoring 12 goals in his last 17 games for Sweden.
The 27-year-old Gyokeres scored 39 goals in the Portuguese league last season. He said, "I just felt that this club is perfect for me." Gyokeres mentioned that his team's 5-1 loss to Arsenal in last November's UEFA Champions League was a major factor in his decision.
He stated, "When I was playing against Arsenal last season, I realized that this is a very strong team. It is very difficult to play against it. That is why I chose Arsenal. Of course, the club's rich history and its huge fan base also attracted me." Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta welcomed the striker, saying: "Victor has a lot of qualities. He is a fast and powerful forward who has an excellent goal-scoring record at club and international level. He has an amazing ability to convert chances into goals."
Arsenal has been very active in the transfer market this summer, signing Spain international midfielder Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard from Brentford, Chelsea forwards Kepa Arrizabalaga and Noni Madueke, and Spain U-21 defender Christian Mosquera from Valencia.
