The increasing use of AI has brought a huge stir amongst people in the tech sector in the year 2025. According to Layoffs.fyi, more than 100,000 people have lost their jobs from 218 companies in total across the world. Major tech companies are now downsizing, as after the pandemic, due to over-expansion, the focus will be on profits and AI.

Chipmaker Intel has initiated the largest layoff drive this year. It has laid off around 24,000 employees-22% of its workforce worldwide. Offices all over the US, Germany, Costa Rica, and Poland have been affected. The effort of Intel is to strengthen itself amidst the growing competition from Nvidia and AMD.

Amazon has also eliminated 14,000 positions across its corporate, HR, and cloud units. CEO Andy Jassy stated that the company must operate like the world's largest startup to find resources for AI investments.

Microsoft laid off approximately 9,000 employees this year, while Google and Meta have cut their Android, hardware, and AI divisions. Oracle has also cut hundreds of jobs in the US to accelerate the growth of its AI-based cloud service.

India's largest IT company, TCS, laid off 20,000 employees in the July-September 2025 quarter, the largest reduction in the company's history. TCS attributed this to AI-driven restructuring and a skills gap. Other Indian IT companies have also become cautious in hiring.

This wave of layoffs has now spread beyond the tech sector to other industries. UPS laid off 48,000 employees due to automation. Ford laid off 8,000-13,000 employees, and PwC laid off 5,600. Paramount Global also eliminated 2,000 jobs due to advertising and streaming losses. This data shows how AI automation and cost-cutting have turned 2025 into one of the most challenging years ever.
