The names of over 3,300 companies are to be struck off from the official registers by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. The Registrars of various states and union territories issued public notice about the striking off of names of these companies in April, according to the provisions in the Companies Act, as per the data available with the ministry.

Of these 3,300 companies, there are over 700 in Maharashtra, 500 in Delhi, over 350 in Karnataka, over 200 each in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. The Registrar of Companies has received applications from companies under Section 248(2) of the Companies Act on specific reasons, including that the companies had not started business within a period of one year from the date of incorporation or had not conducted business during the last two financial years.

Out of the total 28.52 lakh registered companies in the country as of the end of March this year, 18.51 lakh were inactive companies. Under Section 248(2), a company can apply for strike off its name after liquidating all its liabilities by special resolution or with the consent of 75 per cent of the paid-up share capital of its members, subject to certain conditions. The Registrar of Companies had issued a public notice in April to find out if anyone had any objection to the proposal to strike off the names of these companies.

Among the 37 states/union territories, Maharashtra (19 per cent) continues to have the highest number of inactive companies. Delhi has 14 per cent and West Bengal 8 per cent. The number of active companies in the states of Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Telangana has increased as compared to February, 2025. Among the Union Territories, the number of active companies in Jammu and Kashmir has increased by 143 as compared to February, 2025.
