The medical team at Rainbow Children's Hospital showcased exceptional expertise, dedication, and collaboration to rescue this little one, marking a significant first in the country's medical history.
In a groundbreaking medical achievement, Rainbow Children's Hospital in Hyderabad has set a remarkable precedent in India by successfully rescuing an 18-month-old baby from Goa. This young patient was battling severe pneumonia and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) while receiving the most advanced ventilatory support available.
The medical team at Rainbow Children's Hospital showcased exceptional expertise, dedication, and collaboration to rescue this little one, marking a significant first in the country's medical history. The 18-month-old child had ARDS caused by influenza pneumonia and had been on respiratory support for a week, including high-frequency ventilation and 100% oxygen. Despite these efforts, his oxygen levels remained dangerously low, necessitating the use of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) and a transfer to a specialized facility.
ECMO, a process where the blood is externally oxygenated and carbon dioxide removed, allowed the baby's lungs to rest and heal. Dr. Dinesh Kumar Chirla, Director of Intensive Care Services, emphasized the hospital's readiness and experience in pediatric ECMO, comparable to developed countries. The Rainbow Retrieval Team, led by Dr. Kapil B Sachane and Dr. Sai Ram, worked tirelessly for over 24 hours to ensure the child's safe transfer.
