Indian javelin throw star Neeraj Chopra qualified for the Diamond League final in Brussels with a season finish of fourth place in the overall standings after 14 series meets. The finale will be a two-day event from September 13-14.

The Indian star athlete who had won the 2022 edition of the Diamond League, competed in two series events in Doha and Lausanne and gathered 14 points by finishing second. He skipped the Zurich leg of the meet on Thursday.

He is two points behind third-placed Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic. Paris Olympics bronze medallist Anderson Peters of Grenada and German star Julian Weber are leading at the top two positions with 29 and 21 points respectively. The 26-year-old has become the second track and field athlete from India to win two Olympic medals. Earlier, he scripted history as he won the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

During the Paris Olympics, Neeraj was struggling with his back injury because of which he could not cross the 90m mark. Neeraj finished second in the Lausanne Diamond League with a throw of 89.49m in his sixth and final attempt. Peters, with his final throw of 90.61m, and Julian Weber of Germany with a best throw of 88.37m took the first and third positions respectively.

While Chopra took the silver in Paris with a throw of 89.45m, an obvious improvement over the 87.58m with which he won in Tokyo, just wasn't good enough for the reigning world champion and Diamond League Final winner. One of his closest friends in the sport, Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem, outdid him as he set an Olympic record to take the gold by an avalanche of a throw at 92.97m.
