Gallantry Awards Announced: Kirti Chakra to Naik Devendra Pratap Singh, Shaurya Chakra to 8 jawans; Army dog honoured posthumously
The Central Government announced gallantry awards on the eve of Independence Day. On this Independence Day, Naik Devendra Pratap Singh was awarded the Kirti Chakra, the country's second highest peacetime gallantry award. Naik Devendra Pratap Singh was part of an operation in Pulwama on January 29 this year, where he displayed exceptional bravery and killed two terrorists.
Apart from this, Shaurya Chakras have been awarded to 8 soldiers of the army. Among these, Sepoy Karan Veer Singh, and Gunner Jasbir Singh have been awarded the Shaurya Chakra posthumously. Apart from these, Shaurya Chakra awardees include Major Nitin Dhania, Amit Dahiya, Sandeep Kumar, Abhishek Singh, Havildar Ghanshyam and Lance Naik Raghavendra Singh.
Indian Army attacker Belgian Malinois Dog Axel was posthumously awarded the gallantry award 'Mention in Despatch'. The award was given last month for the role of Dog in the counter-insurgency operation in Jammu and Kashmir.
On July 31, at Wanigam, Baramulla, when Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police personnel launched an operation against terrorists hiding in a house. So the dog squad was also included in it.
A camera was installed on the back of Doug Axel so that during the room interventions carried out by him, the correct information of the terrorists could reach the army and they could easily carry out the operation.
As soon as Axel entered the house at the encounter site, the terrorists opened fire on it. He lost his life after being hit by three bullets. An army official said that the assault dog is given special training so that he can nab the suspect.
Axel had cleared one room, but as soon as he entered the other room, the terrorist opened fire on him. On hearing the sound of the bullet, the soldiers were alerted and killed the terrorist hiding in the room, but Axel was also killed due to the bullet.
Axel's post-mortem report states that he sustained bullet injuries as well as ten separate injuries. That is, even after being shot, Axel had fought with the terrorist, due to which he had suffered these injuries.
